The St. Kilda Pier is a Melbourne icon. Built over one hundred years ago, it formed part of the St. Kilda resort, which the area was known for at the time. Over the years, St. Kilda has changed much. However, the pier has remained, along with the nearby Luna Park.
But, in 2003, that all changed. The pier’s kiosk was totally destroyed by fire. The local community had feared that an icon had been lost forever. However, the kiosk was totally rebuilt, using the original design diagrams. What now stands is a testament to the local community’s desire to preserve its heritage, albeit reconstructed.
The St. Kilda pier can be reached by taking tram route 96, from just outside Southern Cross station. Tram routes 12 and 16 also serve the area. The best two stops are Jacka Boulevard and The Esplanade.
